Fireplace: 50BY
Builder: @dwc.australia
A stunning Port Melbourne residence that showcases a bioethanol fireplace as a sculptural centrepiece in a contemporary living space.
Chama Design collaborated with homeowners to create a sophisticated bay-window fireplace feature that serves as both a functional heating solution and an architectural focal point, visible from the living room, dining area, and outdoor deck.
The Vision
The primary objective was to create a striking fire feature that could be enjoyed from multiple angles while maintaining the home's modern, minimalist aesthetic.
The result is a built-in bioethanol firebox with 180-degree viewing that establishes an inviting gathering point without compromising the clean lines of the interior.
Design Features
The installation showcases one of our most popular models, the Bay 50BY, configured in a bay-window-style arrangement that creates a full 180-degree viewing experience from the front and both sides.
This unique three-sided design transforms the fireplace into a sculptural focal point, with the natural granite surround and floating shelves providing both functional media display and architectural continuity throughout the room.
The seamless integration was achieved through the thoughtful pairing of speckled natural granite with fire-rated MDF panels in matte black, while toughened glass fire screens maintain unobstructed views across the full panorama and meet strict safety requirements.
Technical Excellence
The fireplace delivers impressive heating capability, warming up to 60m² with clean-burning bioethanol that produces beautiful orange flames without smoke, soot, or ash—eliminating the need for flues or chimneys.
The design employs a sophisticated combination of materials, including:
- Natural granite for the floating shelves and surround, providing textural warmth
- Fire-rated MDF panels in matte black for a contemporary aesthetic
- Toughened glass fire screens on all three viewing sides for safety and unobstructed 180-degree views
- Black porcelain enamel-coated 304-grade stainless steel burner for durability and longevity
The Port Melbourne project demonstrates how bioethanol fireplaces can serve as stunning architectural features in contemporary homes.
The three-sided viewing capability creates a dynamic focal point that enhances the living experience from every angle, while the absence of flue or chimney requirements provides complete design freedom during installation.
