Installing a fireplace sounds like an arduous job. And if you were talking about a wood-burning or gas fireplace, you’d be absolutely right.
The good news is that installing an ethanol fireplace is a far simpler task.
To begin with, the vent-free nature of these beauties means you can install them almost anywhere in your home or commercial space – because you’re not restricted by the location of an existing chimney or vent.
Additionally, their clean burning nature ensures they produce little to no emissions, soot, or odour, making them eco-friendly and easy to maintain.
That being said, there are restrictions around materials, minimum room sizes and minimum clearances that guide where they can safely be installed.
Let’s get into the nitty gritty of installing the best ethanol fireplace for you.
Installing Different Ethanol Fireplace Inserts
An ethanol fireplace insert is the core unit of all ethanol fireplaces; it simply slots into a prefabricated firebox, freestanding surround or even a custom structure, like a natural stone plinth.
Installing an ethanol fireplace insert is very simple; you can quite 'drop' the unit into the recess. No tools are required once the structure is prepared; however, preparing your structure will require professional installation.
We’ve broadly talked about ethanol fireplace inserts. However, there are two specific options when it comes to ethanol fireplaces – freestanding or built-in – and they both have their pros, cons and specific installation processes.
Installing a Freestanding Ethanol Fireplace
The best part about freestanding bioethanol fireplaces (other than their sleek, sustainable, low-maintenance, agile design) is that they don’t require any installation. See?
Step 1: Unpack it and put it into position.
Step 2: Enjoy!
Simple. You only need to meet the minimum room size.
There is also the option to fix it into position permanently, however many of our customers love the option of relocating it throughout their homes, particularly as the seasons change.

Installing a Built-In Ethanol Fireplace
When it comes to built-in or wall-mounted units, you essentially have two options for an elegant and customisable built-in fireplace:
-
A Ready-To-Install Firebox: an all-in-one solution that requires zero clearance and is simple to install.
-
A Custom Ethanol Fireplace: a bespoke solution that gives you ultimate design flexibility and specific installation requirements.
Both allow you to achieve a cosy vibe but afford different luxuries when it comes to convenience, design freedom and cost.

Installing a Built-In Ethanol Firebox
At Chama Design, we’ve found our ‘Flex Fireplaces’ to be an increasingly popular choice for customers who value ease, aesthetics and affordability.
Technically, a ‘firebox’ is a ready-to-install unit that you can use to achieve no less than eight fireplace styles: single-sided, corner, double-sided, bay, peninsula, island, and bench.
When it comes to installing a unit, you should always follow the instructions outlined in the manufacturer’s handbook. Generally speaking, however, the following steps will give you an overview of the installation process for a built-in ethanol firebox.
Step 1: Select a Location That Adheres to Requirements.
As already mentioned, fireboxes come with no clearance zone because all the necessary clearances to combustible frame components are already built-in. You do, however, have to account for minimum room size and clearances to walls and general combustible materials (not including the frame itself).
One other thing to be mindful of when selecting your location is ensuring there is a protective overhang if you’re installing outdoors. This will prevent your beautiful ethanol fireplace filling with water and becoming permanently damaged.

Step 2: Construct Timber Frame
If you’re building your fireplace into a wall, you’ll need to construct the timber framework with the correct sized cavity. (you can see Flex Fireplaces example here).

Step 3: Insert The Firebox
Slide the firebox into the timber frame cavity.

Step 4: Secure The Firebox
Secure the firebox to the timber frame with screws using the holes in the firebox's mounting bracket (flanges).

Step 5: Add The Wall Panels
Install the wall panels around the firebox's opening. Acceptable fire-rated materials include fibre cement board, fire-rated medium-density fibreboard, stone, tiles, steel, and fire-rated plasterboard.

You must also add your metal trim bead on all edges, plaster all seams and beads, and add the final layer of paint to your wall (if required). It is important to use heat-resistant paint for areas exposed to high temperatures to ensure durability and safety.
Step 6: Assemble The Fireplace
Place the ethanol burner in position, insert the glass fire screens and scatter the decorative glass charcoal.

Please note that you should always follow the comprehensive instructions provided by the manufacturer. These steps are merely a guide.
Installing a Custom Burner-Only Ethanol Fireplace
A custom recessed ethanol fireplace is a brilliant option if you’re looking for a statement piece that elevates the decorative styling within any space, from urban dwellings to private residences. It empowers you with total design freedom, customising every fireplace element to suit the room or area.

As with a built-in ethanol fireplace, you should follow the instructions outlined in the manufacturer’s handbook when it comes to installing burner-only ethanol fireplaces. It’s the only way to do it safely, correctly and without voiding your warranty.
Broadly speaking, there are just six steps (outside of those involved with building your custom setting); Custom Burner-Only installation mainly requires technical and detailed planning.

Step 1: Confirm the selected burner for the appropriate minimum room size (as outlined in your manual).
Step 2: Confirm the fireplace location meets minimum clearances, whether installing your burner in a firebox (with sides, back or/and top) or a semi-firebox (e.g. installed against a wall with open sides).
Step 3: Confirm the burner firebox/semi-firebox is made from compliant materials that are hard and true non-combustible, such as steel, concrete, brick or stone.
Step 4: Confirm the fireplace surrounds are made from compliant fire-rated materials or that there are compliant clearances from existing combustible materials.
Step 5: Construct the fireplace’s surrounds and the cut-out area for the top tray ethanol burner. (refer to the cut-out dimensions on the model specification sheet)
Step 6: Insert the burner into the cut-out.

Ethanol Fireplace Installation FAQ
Can You Put a TV Above a Bioethanol Fireplace?
You absolutely can, ensuring both safety and aesthetic appeal. On the condition that the TV’s position meets one of these three requirements:

It sits back off the level of the flame

Can You Put a Bio-Ethanol Fireplace on a Plasterboard Wall?
Fire-rated plasterboard can be used as wall panelling around an ethanol fireplace. However, the 'firebox' must be made from a 'hard' non-combustible, like steel, concrete, brick or stone.
As you can see, ethanol fireplace installations are incredibly simple, so it’s little wonder we’re seeing more and more people through our showroom, opting for a sustainability-focused alternative that empowers them with more freedom, flexibility, choice and ease.
