Set in a classic Melbourne period home in Elsterwick, this project centres on a full-width entertainment wall — a composed joinery system built around a linear ethanol flame and clad in Italian marble from the fireplace through to the kitchen.

The Vision

The client knew what they wanted — a fireplace that owned the room. Ambience first, with the heating as a bonus.

Gas wasn't an option; the clients always wanted a fireplace — a design statement that felt intentional. Our role was to confirm the technical requirements and guide the installation to meet compliance standards, ensuring the result was as precise as it was beautiful.

Design Features

The Flex 50SS Single Sided Ethanol Fireplace sits within a full-width entertainment wall — a composed joinery system that integrates an open wine cabinet to the left, a fluted dark timber cabinet with brass hardware to the right, and a floating TV above.

The surround and bench are clad in Arabescato Vagli marble — a stone born in Italy's Apuan Alps, with soft grey-white veining and warm flecks of gold. Substantial in presence, quiet in character.

The same stone runs continuously through to the kitchen, creating an unbroken material thread that unifies the home rather than treating the fireplace as a standalone feature.

The home itself set the tone. Original cornicing, high ceilings, and heritage detailing give this period residence its character — and rather than fighting that architecture, the fireplace embraces it. The linear flame sits within a marble plinth that reads as architecture, not furniture.

Technical Excellence

The ethanol fireplace delivers clean-burning bioethanol heat with no flue, chimney, smoke, or ash. What began as a purely aesthetic decision quickly proved its worth as a genuine heating solution — the room gets warm, properly warm, and the client hadn't expected that.

The installation was straightforward. A carpenter assisted with the build, and while the product required a hands-on review to fully understand at first, the process became clear quickly and the execution simple.

"Very calming, aesthetically pleasing. Very relaxing to be in front of — no sound, and more practical than we expected. People ask about it constantly. It's the best thing we did for the living area."
